What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?
It's believed that the cause of dandruff is when the scalp produces excess sebum secretion at an accelerated rate of normal skin cells, leading to white and itchy flakes. When this condition triggers the activity of Malassezia, skin inhabitant fungi that thrives in this oily unbalanced environment, it creates skin inflammation that leads to seborrheic dermatitis, a scalp condition triggering red, itchy, irritated and over-proliferating greasy and yellowish flakes.
Seborrheic dermatitis is commonly found on the scalp, but can also be on the face, around the nose, in the eyebrows, on eyelids and behind ears. It can also even be seen on different parts of the body! Anyone can have seborrheic dermatitis, but it effects most commonly infants under 3 months and adults between ages 30 to 60.
Treatment for seborrheic dermatitis starts with reducing symptoms such as inflammation and itch which is usually done through a shampoo or lotion designed to help relieve these symptoms. Zinc pyrithione, having fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties, is one of the ingredients Kamedis uses in their Dandruff Shampoo and is also one of the key ingredients to treating seborrheic dermatitis. The other part of treatment is finding ways to relax and reduce stress levels. So with the combination of good self-care and a great product regime, you’ll be on your way to a healthier scalp.
